Transparency about artificial intelligence

Ilena is a writing environment built to support authors, lyricists and poets in their work. Some of its features use artificial intelligence models to analyse a text or to offer directions for writing.

Our principle is simple: artificial intelligence may assist the author, but it must never take their place.

How Ilena uses artificial intelligence

Ilena uses artificial intelligence as a linguistic assistance tool. Depending on the feature, it may serve to:

• analyse certain characteristics of a text, such as the number of feet in a line;
• recognise its structure or its tone;
• produce linguistic information: definitions, synonyms, antonyms, rhymes;
• offer words or short passages that may help the author carry their work forward.

Most of Ilena’s features do not produce text meant for your work. They analyse existing content or present information intended to support the writing process. The dictionary and rhyme results are, however, also produced by an artificial intelligence model rather than drawn from a fixed reference work.

Automatic analysis on save

Each time a work is saved, Ilena analyses the verse lines whose emotion or length is not yet known. This analysis feeds the rhythm and tone indicators displayed next to the text.

It applies only to verse lines, one line at a time, and happens only once per line: a line that has already been analysed is not analysed again until it is edited. This analysis is part of how the editor works and cannot be turned off separately.

The features that generate text

At present, only the suggestion features can produce text meant to be inserted into a work.

Automatic suggestion

When enabled, automatic suggestion may propose a continuation of the text while the author writes. It is triggered only on a verse line, when the cursor sits at the end of the line and typing pauses for a moment.

On-demand suggestion

The author may also deliberately request a suggestion using the Ctrl + Space shortcut.

Unlike automatic suggestion, this feature never triggers on its own. It is activated only when the author explicitly uses the shortcut provided for that purpose.

Turning suggestions off

Both features are governed by a single setting, Line completion, available in Ilena’s Settings. This setting is enabled by default.

When it is turned off, no suggestion is requested: neither while writing, nor through the Ctrl + Space shortcut. The analysis described in the previous section does, however, continue to apply on save.

The author always keeps control

The suggestions Ilena produces are presented as possibilities, not as decisions taken on the author’s behalf.

A suggestion:

• is never permanently inserted without an action from the user;
• may be ignored, accepted, modified or deleted;
• does not replace the author’s creative judgement;
• does not guarantee the accuracy, originality or quality of the proposed result.

The author remains responsible for their choices and for the final version of their work.

Ilena does not seek to write a song or a poem in the user’s place. Its role is to support searching, exploration and revision throughout the creative process.

Limits of the suggestions

Artificial intelligence models work from linguistic probabilities. Their suggestions may therefore sometimes be:

• imprecise or poorly suited to the context;
• repetitive or unoriginal;
• inconsistent with the author’s intent;
• culturally or linguistically imperfect;
• unintentionally similar to formulations that already exist.

Users should always reread and assess suggestions before incorporating them into a work.

Ilena cannot guarantee that a suggestion is entirely original or free of any right held by a third party. The author must exercise their own judgement, particularly when planning to publish, record or commercialise a work.

How texts are processed

When a feature assisted by artificial intelligence is used, the elements of text required for it to work are transmitted to a technology provider in order to produce the requested analysis or suggestion.

We limit these transmissions to what the feature needs to function:

• text is transmitted one line at a time; a work is never sent in full;
• depending on the feature, the transmission is limited to one line, to the beginning of a line being written, or to a single word;
• no information identifying the author accompanies these transmissions: no name, no email address, no account identifier;
• neither the transmitted text nor the response received is written to our technical logs.

These transmissions do not contradict the confidentiality of your works. Your lyrics remain private: they are not made public and are never used to train a model. They are transmitted in fragments, only when you use a feature that requires it, and only for the time needed to produce the requested result.

La Tour d’Ivoire does not use users’ works to train its own artificial intelligence models, and does not knowingly allow third-party providers to use that content to train theirs. Information about the processing, retention and protection of data is set out in more detail in our Privacy policy.

Users should avoid entering sensitive personal information belonging to other people into their works, unless they have a legitimate reason and the necessary permissions to do so.

Artificial intelligence and ownership of the work

Ilena claims no ownership right over the texts created or modified by its users.

Using a suggestion does not transfer ownership of the work to Ilena or to La Tour d’Ivoire. However, the rules on copyright and on content generated or assisted by artificial intelligence may vary by country and by circumstance.

It is up to the user to verify the applicable rules when publishing or commercially exploiting a work.

Identifying assisted features

We aim to clearly indicate which features use artificial intelligence, notably through descriptions, indicators in the interface, or information presented at the time they are used.

We will keep improving these indications so that users can understand:

• when a feature uses artificial intelligence;
• what type of result it produces;
• what data it needs in order to work;
• how the feature can be enabled or disabled.

Technology in the service of writing

Ilena was created for people who care about the craft of writing.

We believe technology can help an author explore an idea, search for the right word, or consider a new direction. It cannot, however, replace the experience, the intent, the sensibility or the personal voice that give a work its value.

With Ilena, the author remains the author.
